For Charlie Co-Comanche “Wolfhound” Deployed in Bostick, Afghanistan “The People Are The Prize” and You Can Help Them Win This War -By Andrew J. PowersOctober 3, 2011, Mahopac, N.Y.-
According to Cpt. Michael P. Brabner, Commander of a company of 140 American men and women serving withCharlie Company, 2-27 IN, 3rd BDE, 25th Infantry, Forward Operating Base Bostick Afghanistan, who’s primary mission is to protect the citizens against a determined insurgency, his dedicated but tired soldiers are but days away from facing 8 feet of snow after spending six months defending against multiple Taliban attacks armed with everything from small arms to IEDs, mortars and rockets. FOB Bostick is high in the mountainous northeast region of Afghanistan on the Pakistan border.
Despite the many hardships however, true to the American Spirit of the brave American Rangers who led the way in World War II, Cpt. Brabner is convinced that regardless of what some may say, “the people are the prize, and his company has been training extensively in language and local cultural understanding and have convinced the local tribal elders, citizens, civilians and Afghan Security Forces that they are their true allies and have only the interests of the people at heart.”
Along with the challenges of Taliban propaganda that Americans are selfish and evil occupants, one of Cpt. Brabner’s greatest challenges is convincing the media andAmerican public that this war not just dropping bombs, casualties and death; it is about winning the hearts and minds of the Afghan people who are the primary focus of their mission and the real prize.
One of Cpt. Brabner’s most profound statements to me was “My men can fight with the best of them but it's their ability to turn the switch off and pass out toys or visit a school to donate over $15,000 worth of school supplies, candy and toys to local Afghan children that puts a smile on my face.”This is where the American public can do their part to help these brave soldiers to win this war by winning the hearts and minds of the Afghan people and to keep the soldier’s morale and welfare without leaving the comforts of their homes.
A simple letter of support, a holiday card or a small care package for the soldiers….anything from coffee, DVDs, cookies or snacks, anything to show them that you care and make their burdens just a little bit easier to bear. But from what Cpt. Brabner tells me, nothing brings a smile to his brave men and women’s faces more than care packages and letters that they can distribute to the children and poverty stricken civilians of Afghanistan.
Your small efforts and their effects are priceless and a most valuable asset in helping win and bring an end to this complex counter-insurgency. Whatever you send will be passed out to the children and other civilians, ease their suffering and assist the mission of our troops to accomplish their mission.Love, caring and compassion from the American people can accomplish more than bombs and bullets.
Times are difficult for Americans these days I know, but even the smallest gesture can help. And to those with access to Human Resource Departments, religious and social organizations, start a collection campaign this holiday season. And to Captains of Industry and our major corporations, I ask that you follow the lead of Bill Nelson, CEO of HBO Network and lead the way by helping in any way possible.
Together we can make a difference. According to Cpt. Brabner, “When I took command I made a promise to them (his company) on the parade field that I would always put their well being above my own and because of people like you I'm able to hold true to my promise. They are under constant stress and enemy fire and what down time they have from missions is well spent because people care. There is a war up here in the Northeastern portion of Afghanistan along the Pakistan border. The things they do without regard for their safety and in the name of their country truly inspires. I'm proud of them each and every day and even more honored to be their commander.”
Now it is time for us to do our part to help them win this war.Letters and care packages can be sent to:ATTN: CPT M.P. Brabner C Co, 2-27 IN, 3rd BDE, 25th IN DIV FOB BOSTICK APO AE 09310
