Bell Tower, St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Wheeling, WV - Brown family donation
St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Wheeling, WV, Pastor Rick Gast would read the crucifixion story at the Good Friday evening service. Using only sound and lighting (lightning and thunder) and music from the great pipe organ in the balcony filling the sanctuary, Jesus' death became real for me.
As the Biblical text told of the nails driven into Christ's hands and feet, someone outside the doors of the sanctuary with a sledge hammer recreated how it would have sounded for Jesus' mother and followers.
This hymn, "Ah Holy Jesus," ended the service. In darkness, one by one, we'd leave the church. I will never forget it.

I recently listened to someone do a presentation about beauty. It’s more than “something in the eye of the beholder”. I learned (for me) it’s part of the journey to come to an experience – it’s an integrating experience . Just look at simple things, notice how you are moved in subtle ways. Notice how little we notice. To paraphrase a Daoist proverb “If you could hear the sounds of stone vibrating in the mountain, why would you ever need a jade pendant?”… (Or, if you can find the beauty in everything, why would you need objects of beauty?) In the solemnity and spirit of the season, here’s a work of beauty for the heart, mind, and soul. (There used to be a version without the video which I preferred – sometimes the imagination is richer.) May it move you as it moved me. But it takes a bit to go on the journey of discovery, to make the connections in new ways. So enjoy this , do a little googling to learn the translation of this song (it’s very popular in Greece, sung at Easter), the vocalist(Irene Papas) is a Greek actress/singer with the most interesting voice. Listen to the pulse of time and integration, dis-integration, re-integration, in the music.
BTW, The translation is hard to find … so here it is… O! GLIKI MOU EAR (Oh, my sweet spring) [the season] [This is sung during the Thursday before Easter and it is supposed to be the lament of virgin Mary when she saw the dead Jesus]
(Words:) -"The perfume-bringing women sprinkled the grave with perfumes, having come very early in the morning; Your all-pure mother started lamenting because you, Word, were dead. And the young girl" [this still means the V.M., never mind how old she was!] "was crying, with warm tears, tearing her insides"
- "Oh, my sweet spring, my sweetest child, where has your beauty set?"
[The word used is special for the setting of the sun, so the beauty of Jesus has set like the sun. And of course, Jesus was the Word, as in the beginning of John's gospel].
- "All the generations praise by [a] hymn your burial, [my Good/Beautiful]"
- "Oh, my sweet spring" [ etc.]Blessings to you and your family in this season,Bill
