Mother's Day, May 10, 2009
1870's peace movement led by women, birthed the beginnings of Mother's Day. I did not know this. Listening to the linked video, I begin to feel I am an odd mother, having a very different view of what makes humanity safe. I cannot fathom how any group of people can promote disarming even as they live in and see the evil in this world. I appreciate the intention, but I feel it is to never be fulfilled. Not now, not in anytime past, and certainly not in our near or distant future.
We took the girls to see Star Trek yesterday. What a cool movie! It's well worth the admission price. For me, the movie fast-forwarded me to a future I most likely will never see, but which could very well be the future of my great-grandchildren. If you follow history and know anything about the space programs around the world, you will see the linkages to the future in this movie. I think there must always be the yearning for and defense of peace. But I am certain it will only ever be that -- a yearning. A very RIGHTEOUS YEARNING, yet only a yearning. Makes me rethink what hell is, too. Maybe this life is hell, with all its warring and turmoil, mindless strife.
Perhaps from the ages-long contention around this PEACE/WAR issue, we can take a lesson: just maybe, we need both to be free and to have a desirable life. Watching "Star Trek," the newest movie about the characters' lives before the U.S.S. Enterprise, and seeing how battle may be done in a millennium from now, I don't have a lot of hope for our living in a world where either/or is an option. I think it will always be that a world contending for BOTH on either side, will be the reality.
